Ex-Cop Found Dead in Home

John W Garmer, A retired policeman of the Northeastern District was found dead today in the kitchen of his home in the 100 block of Kenwood Ave.
When his daughter, Mrs. Allen Bradford, entered the room she found him sitting in a chair where she left him last night. Besides the daughter he leaves three sons, Harold, William and Phillip. Garmer was on the force from 1899 to 1924, when he was retired.

John's oldest daughter Marie, met a member of the armed forces, Jeter Burnette Worley of Worley Madison County North Carolina, while he was stationed at Ft. Howard in Baltimore County. They married the week after he was honorably discharged in January 1915. Marie died tragically a couple of weeks after the birth of her only son, John Curtis Worley Sr, in 1915.

John William Garmer was born to John Henry Garmer Jr and Christina Herold-Garmer. Initially working in the family shoe business, John graduated from the Baltimore City Police Academy in 1899. He served for 25 years. The Inner Harbor area was his beat. His wife Katherine Grenzer and he had six children, Louis B, Maria L, John Harold, William Henry, Helen C., and Philip F.. Katherine and John started married life at 504 S Ann Street the current home of a popular pub, Peter's Inn. 504 S Ann was a Garmer family home from the late 1840s until 1910. They lived most of their married lives together at 110 N. Kenwood Avenue a block from Patterson Park. John was an avid baseball player belonging to the Baltimore City Police force's Eastern District baseball team. He was the captain of the team for many years.

The family were members of the Jackson Square Lutheran Church at E Fairmont and Irvine place and Immanuel Lutheran on S Caroline Street. John along with many members of the Grenzer and Garmer family are interred in Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery in Lauraville.
