John Hilen "Pete" Wilson, 82, life-long resident of Valparaiso, died at 3:30 a.m. today at the family home, 503 Jefferson street. He had been in ill health for the last year with a heart ailment.
The decedent was born in Valparaiso Jan. 11, 1868, a son of John D. Wilson and Nancy (Brown) Wilson.
In his early manhood he was associated with his father, John D., and brother, Edwin L., in the building business. The firm erected the original Porter county court house, the First Presbyterian church, and many other pioneer structures in Valparaiso and Porter county.
During the early nineties he served as deputy under his brother, Edwin L. Wilson, who served two terms as county clerk.
Oldest Elk
He was the oldest living member of Valparaiso Lodge, No. 500, BPO Elks, being a charter member and also serving as exalted ruler. He was also a member of the First Presbyterian church.
On May 7, 1891, he married Lillian Lewis, of Valparaiso in the Wilson homestead on North Franklin avenue.
Surviving besides the widow are two sisters, Mrs. Rachel E. Van Ness, of Valparaiso, and Mrs. Emma E. McKeehan of Toledo.
Memorial services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Sunday in the First Presbyterian church, with the Rev. Oliver C. Starn, officiating. Burial will be in Maplewood cemetery with officers of the Elks' lodge in charge of committal services.
Friends may call at the Bartholomew funeral home, 102 Monroe street from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday and from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sunday.
