Baptized Roman Catholic Julianne Fleming on September 16, 1879 in Angers, Quebec, she is the eldest child and first daughter of John Fleming and Marie Champeau dit Lenneville. Julia grew up to at least around age 14 near Buckingham, Quebec. By the late 1890s she lived with her family in the area of Blind River, Ontario, Canada. She entered her first marriage while living there and the extent of this marriage appears to have occurred there from 1900 into 1906. She moved from Blind River, Ontario, Canada to Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, United States in October 1906 after separating from her husband.

She was the mother of Arthur Frank Lemieux born in 1901 from her first marriage and Edward Fleming, later known as Robert Fleming) born in 1911 during her common law second marriage. Julia was troubled with shame over her second son's illegitimate birth, having made some effort to conceal it.

Her relationships included:
* First husband Frank Joseph Lemieux. Frank was 3 years older than Julia. How they met is not clear, however, their families seem to have been well acquainted. Julia's maternal uncle Oliver Champeau was married to Frank's sister Diana Lemieux in 1892 in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, so Frank's nieces/nephews were Julia's first cousins. Frank and Julia married February 14, 1900 in Sault Ste. Marie, Algoma, Ontario, Canada. They separated in early October 1906 when Julia left Blind River by train with their son to participate in her mother's 44th birthday party. It appears she moved in with her mother and her and Frank never reconciled.

* Second known relationship Roscoe Marquies Grove. Roscoe and Julia were the same age, 29 or 30 when they met. Roscoe was from Indiana, a carpenter/contractor residing in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan from spring 1909 through early summer 1910 as part of a crew building the federal building. DNA and surviving records of his proximity to Julia strongly suggest he was the biological father of her second son. They both lived very close in the same neighborhood in Sault Ste. Marie the entire time Roscoe was in the area. He left the area in early summer 1910 when the construction was complete to follow his employer to another project. It is not clear if he was aware she was pregnant.

* Third known relationship, second husband Theodore Joseph Lavigne. Ted was 8 years older than Julia. Several of his sisters also resided in Sault Ste. Marie - its likely they met there, probably in 1910 perhaps earlier. She appears to have started residing with Ted from later in 1910 to possibly into 1914 or early 1915. They lived in Milwaukee together at least in early 1911 when Edward was born and Ted is listed as the legal father. If they were still together in 1913, Ted was residing in St. Paul, Minnesota that year. No formal record of marriage has been found, so that their relationship appears to have been a common law marriage. Theodore is listed as Julia's second husband in her granddaughter Mary's scrapbook from information provided by Mary's mother.

* Fourth known relationship, third and last husband John Silas Young. John was Julia's neighbor in Sault Ste. Marie when they married, so that is likely how they met - he was 13 years her junior. They married in Minneapolis, Minnesota October 25, 1915 and resided there into 1916. They moved back to Sault Ste. Marie sometime in 1916 or early 1917 at the latest. While there, they separated and lived in different residences for a time. They reconciled by Julia's death in late 1918 and were residing in Minneapolis at that time.

Julia's death at age 39 was the result of the flu during the world Influenza Pandemic of 1918. Her sons were only 17 (Arthur) and 7 (Edward) years old when they lost their mom. Arthur was on his own and his daughter said he eventually joined a circus. Edward was taken in by his maternal Aunt Lavina Fleming, Julia's sister. Lavina appears to have kept him until sometime in 1920 when she transferred care over to Ted Lavigne his legal father.

Julia's son Edward ended up being placed in "The Michigan Home and Training School" in 1921. Because of all the tragedy that struck Julia's family, Julia's grandchildren from Edward did not have much knowledge on her. Genetic genealogy has helped piece the family back together in September 2016 through autosomal DNA testing of two of her grandchildren from Edward and one from Arthur, providing the expected strong match in the 700 cM range, which even above the average 400 cM range expected proving their half first cousin relationship.

Julia is buried in an unmarked grave in St. Mary's Cemetery which was "the next available" as was the practice during the Influenza Pandemic of 1918 in Minneapolis.
