North Carolina Governor, Presidential Cabinet Member. He graduated from the University of North Carolina in 1919 and established a successful career in textile manufacturing. He served on the State Vocational Education Board, (1929-33), on the State Highway Commission, (1933-37), as director of the textile division of the Office of Price Administration, in 1944 and was special consultant to the secretary of agriculture, in 1945. In 1953, he was elected as a Democrat the 22nd Lieutenant Governor of North Carolina and when Governor William B. Umstead died in office, Hodges assumed the duties as the 64th Governor of North Carolina, serving until 1961. After leaving office he was appointed by President Kennedy as Secretary of Commerce, serving (1961-65). He later served as board chairman of the Research Triangle Foundation and was president of the Rotary International, in 1967.
