19 April 2012:
Ernest Henry Cupper was, indeed, related to HA Cupper - he was HA's
cousin. He was the 10th child and 4th son of Alfred Cupper and Clara
Ashford who lived at White House Farm, Bedfield, Suffolk - I might have
a photo opportunity of the farm soon. Alfred Cupper was the brother of
Henry Adams Cupper Senior and therefore the uncle of our intrepid
pioneer HA Cupper (Henry is FAG #55534174 and came to America with his family in 1877 and settled in Monument, Grant County, Oregon on the Cupper Ranch now known as Great Expectations Hunting Preserve - Pam R.)

Ernest is not mentioned in any burial records for the UK and therefore
he must have "gone abroad". I have found a passenger record for E.
Cupper travelling to New York in April 1889 aboard the S.S. Westernland
via Antwerp. His age tallies with his birth year. It is noticeable on
the page of the passenger list that all the people are young men and
women.

Having looked at the UK census records for him, there is no evidence of
any mental disability noted on the census sheets. He is recorded as a 5
year old, boarding at a "Dame School" or private school on Shop Street,
Worlingworth in 1871, the house which I know well - the building
survives. In 1881, he lived at home as a "Farmers son". By 1891, the
family no longer lived at the farm in Bedfield. Many of Ernest's
brothers and sisters died before 1889.

Given that he was the tenth child and his mother was 40 when she had
him, perhaps he might have had a mental deficiency - who knows. This
flies in the face of the evidence that he travelled to America alone! We
might be able to assume from the scanty evidence, that he was a sane man
when he travelled to the USA. What a pity that the 1890 US Census
records are no more. I cannot find him in the 1901 US Census either.
