Garnett William Smith , 74, of Harrisonburg, died Sunday, Oct. 26, 2003, at Rockingham Memorial Hospital.

Mr. Smith was born Feb. 23, 1929, in Rockingham County, and was a son of the late John and Cora Knicely Smith .

He was a lifelong resident of Rockingham County and attended school in Mount Crawford. He had been employed at Southern States, Harrisonburg Motor Express and Coiner Parts.

On April 8, 1950, he married Dorothy Marie Hawkins, who survives.

Also surviving are five daughters, Alice Harper and husband, Grover, of Harrisonburg, Catherine Caplinger and husband, Bob, of Bridgewater, Susan Coffey and husband, Jim, of Rockbridge, Mary King of Weyers Cave, Sara Smith and fiancé, Michael Reday of McGaheysville; three sons, John Smith and wife, Denise, of Harrisonburg, Willy Smith and wife, Bonnie, of Pompano Beach, Fla., Samuel Smith and wife, Lisa, of Harrisonburg; two sisters, Jean Pritchett and Lola Curry, both of Verona; one brother, Glenn Smith of Burketown; one half sister, Olie Foster of Sangersville; 22 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.

The Rev. David Lagerveld will conduct the funeral service 2 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 29, 2003, at the Kyger Funeral Home in Harrisonburg. Burial will follow at the Mount Crawford Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Tuesday from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the National Stroke Association, 9707 E. Easter Lane, Englewood, Calif.
