Adolph L. Lowe was born in Nordhausen, Germany. Joined the Navy at the age of 20. Served through the Civil War. Was actived at the Battle of Port Royal and present at the bombardment of Charleston, SC. He was stationed on the Ottowa, the Seminole and the Wabash, which were among the first gunboats to be built by the US Navy. He was discharged at the end of the War due to injuries received.
He re-enlisted during WWI. Adolph was sent to Virginia Beach with a machine gun battalion.
He was a member of the G.A.R., the Commodore of the Naval Veterans, a member of the Virginia Beach Masonic Order, No. 243, and of the American Legion at Lansdale.
Adolph spoke eight languages fluently, including Greek and Latin. He attended the Lutheran Church.
He was survived by his widow, Rose Kaiser Lowe, five sons and two daughters.
