Lawrence Lindsay Summerhays, Salt Lake City attorney, passed away February 3, 2000.

He was born December 5, 1911, in Salt Lake City, Utah, to William Henry and Lula Bennion Lindsay Summerhays. Marred Vernice Alleyne Hartley December 14, 1943, in Southern Pines, North Carolina; solemnized in the Salt Lake LDS Temple December 14, 1945. Mr. Summerhays attended Salt Lake City schools and graduated from Granite High School. He received B.A. and Juris Doctorate degrees from the University of Utah where he served as Junior Class Treasurer and student body Vice President.

In February, 1941, he was called to active duty in the U.S. Army and assigned to the gunnery school at Fort Sill, OK. Upon completion of the course he was retained as an instructor at Fort Sill until early 1943 when he was assigned to the 675th Glider F.A. Btn. of the 11th Airborne Division. He served with the 11th Airborne in the Pacific Theater of Operations, seeing action in New Guinea, Leyte and Luzon. The division went from Luzon to Okinawa and was the first unit to land in Japan. He remained in Japan for three months and returned to the U.S. in November, 1945. He was discharged in February, 1946, and elected to join the Army Reserves where he served as Division Artillery commander of the 96th Reserve Division at Ft. Douglas. He retired with the rank of Colonel.

Mr. Summerhays was a member of the Utah State Bar and American Bar Association and served as attorney for the OPA and War Assets Adm. before entering private practice. A trial attorney for over 40 years, he was a member of the law firm of Hess, Summerhays and Boud. He joined the firm of Rich and Strong, later Strong and Hanni, and was a senior partner and president of the firm at the time of his retirement in 1985.

Larry had a life-long passion for the game of golf, which he learned at a very young age on Nibley Park and Forest Dale golf courses. He was Utah State Jr. champion, Utah State seniors champion, LDS All Church Senior Division champion four consecutive years, three time Willow Creek Country Club champion and was the winner of many other Utah amateur tournaments. He had a picture perfect swing, shot his age on his home course of Willow Creek at age 75 and played his last round of golf at age 86. Sports and the great outdoors were a large part of Larry's life. He spent many hours hunting and fishing. He dearly loved University of Utah athletics and was a football and basketball season ticket holder for over 55 years.

Larry was an active member of the LDS Church, serving in various auxiliaries. He was a member of the bishopric of the Mountain View II Ward and served on the Hillside Stake High Council for eleven years.

He is survived by his wife, Alleyne; his children, Jane Summerhays of New York, NY, Lindsay (Ronny) Cutshall, L. Barton (Denise) Summerhays and Scott H. Summerhays all of Salt Lake City; ten grandchildren; sisters, Emma Walker and Norma Purrington of Salt Lake City and Marjorie Hovick of Fountain Valley, CA. Preceded in death by sisters Gwen S. Todd, Helen S. Wise, and brothers Paul Summerhays, Preston L. Summerhays and Melvin L. Summerhays.

Services will be held Tuesday, February 8, 2000 at the Hillside Stake Center (1900 E. 1400 S.) at 12 noon. A viewing will be held on Monday, February 7, 2000, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Larkin Mortuary (260 E. South Temple) and Tuesday 10:30 a.m. to 11:40 a.m. at the Stake Center. Contributions for a scholarship fund in Larry's name may be made to the University of Utah Law School.
