Edna was born in Lostine (near LaGrande), Oregon, to Mary Elizabeth Alice Shaw and Thomas Leishman Kerr on January 7, 1911. She was baptized a member of the LDS Church on April 1, 1919. The Logan, Richmond area was Edna's home during her youth. She often mused, "It's comforting to live in a home shadowed by the mountains". Edna was gifted musically and sang duets at school and church functions with her older sister Muriel, accompanied on the piano by another sister Verna. While in high school she sang the lead in many operettas. She graduated from Logan High School in 1928.
The "big band" sound was sweeping the country when Don Warner began courting Edna. The couple had endless dates dancing at Saltaire and Rainbow Rendezvous to the music of such celebrated musicians as Harry James, Tommy Dorsey, and Glenn Miller. In 1935 Edna and Don were married. Edna taught herself how to sew early in the marriage. Her family and friends were recipients of couture-quality clothing and intricately embroidered linens for over 60 years. She particularly enjoyed sewing for her husband and two sons, Don, Jr. and Jan.
The couple cared deeply for each other all their lives. Even thought Edna was plagued with major health problems during her marriage, she routinely joined her husband and sons on frequent week long fishing trips so she could cook for them. Jan passed away in 1977. Edna lost her husband in 1988. Edna met adversity with elegance. Even though crippled with arthritis and usually in a wheelchair, she routinely visited family and friends in nursing homes. Edna's daughter-in-law, Barbara and son, Don were her faithful chauffeurs. She never learned to drive a car. Don, Jr. and Barbara cared for their mother in their home for seven years.
This gentle, benevolent lady will also be forever associated with homemade mustard pickles, apricot/pineapple preserves, and remarkable tapioca pudding.
Don and Edna had four grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. Edna is survived by a brother, Glen Kerr of Hyrum. Edna was preceded in death by sisters, Verna Kerr Johnson of Brigham City, Utah; and Muriel DuBois of Mesa, Arizona; and a brother, Elmer Kerr of Tooele, Utah.
Funeral services will be held 12 Noon Tuesday on September 16, 1997 in the Wasatch Lawn Mortuary Chapel, 3401 Highland Drive, where friends may call on Tuesday from 10:45 to 11:45 a.m. prior to services. Interment, Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park.
