Lima Railroad Officials Die In Rt. 25 Wreck

Two Lima railroad officials, a Lakeview man and a Kentucky resident were killed and six other persons were injured in four crashes in the Lima area yesterday afternoon

Dead are:

Byron L. Dennis, 52, of 128 S. McDonel St., freight agent for the Nickel Plate Railroad.

Paul J. Miller, 56, of 304 Dana Ave., road foreman of engines for the Nickel Plate.

Alfred Ledford, 57, of Oneida, Ky.

Franklin Kneer, 61, of Lakeview.

The Lima men and Ledford were victims of a two-car crash which occurred at 5 p.m. yesterday at the intersection of Route 25 and Hengstler Road, just north of Wapakoneta. Also injured in the crash was Wayne Kauffman, 37, of 4 Jean Court, assistant trainman for the Nickel Plate Railroad. He received a fractured right ankle, scalp and facial lacerations. Admitted to St. Rita's Hospital, his condition was listed as fairly good this morning.

State patrolmen investigating the fatal crash near Wapakoneta reported Ledford was driving south alone on Route 25. A car in front of him stopped to make a left turn onto Hengstler Road, and Ledford swerved to the left to avoid hitting that automobile. Instead, his car crashed head-on into the northbound car driven by Dennis.

Ledford was killed instantly by a fractured skull, fractured neck and internal injuries, according to Dr. Richard Schaefers, Auglaize County coroner. Miller was pronounced dead on arrival at St. Rita's. He also suffered a fractured neck and fractured skull, authorities reported.

Dennis died in St. Rita's at 3 a.m. today from head injuries. He also received a fractured right ankle, fractured left hip, possible fractured right hip and multiple lacerations.

The three Lima men were returning home from a Nickel Plate conference in Muncie, Ind., the patrolmen were informed.

Dennis was born in Elwood, Ind., and was married in 1925 to Margaret Beech in Tipton, Ind. He served as freight agent at St. Marys, Minster and at Marion, Ind., before coming to Lima 2 1/2 years ago.

He was a member of Mercer Lodge No. 121, F&AM, St. Marys, the Lima Traffic Club, Central Church of Christ, Brotherhood of American Railway Employees and the Association of Commerce.

A son, 1st Lt. Gene A. Dennis, graduate of West Point in 1950, was reported missing in Korea exactly three years ago today.

Surviving besides the widow are two brothers, Charles R. Dennis, Dayton; Ralph M., Elwood, Ind., and a sister, Mrs. R. E. Francis, Ogden, Utah.

The body will remain in the Chiles & Son Funeral Home for services at 3:30 p.m. Friday. The Rev. Paul N. Runk will officiate and burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery.
