Botanist. He was a 19th century German Botanist, who, through his observations of algae, was the first to note the entry of sperm cells into the ovum, thereby significantly advancing knowledge of the reproductive process. He studied at the universities of Breslau, Leipzig, and Berlin successively and graduating in 1848 as doctor of philosophy. When he was young, he was political. His research was done in his private laboratory in Berlin. He only held a teaching post of importance for four years, 1864 to 1868. His research was published in the "Annals of Scientific Botany," which he founded in 1858 and edited until his death. Upon his father's death, he inherited a great estate, which financed his scientific endeavors.
