US Congressman. He was born in Orange, Virginia, to Thomas Nelson and his wife Martha Oliver Morris Newman on October 5, 1804. He was educated locally and pursued academic courses. Following his education, he entered politics and held several local offices. He married Anne Maria "Mary" Brooke in Fauquier, Virginia, on February 21, 1826, and the couple had one child together, a boy named Thomas Marshall Newman born in 1827. His wife Anna passed away in Wheeling, West Virginia, on May 15, 1836, at the age of 50. He then served a term as a Member of the Virginia House of Delegates from 1836 to 1838. He married for a second time to Eloisa Tomlinson in Marshall, West Virginia, on November 28, 1838, and the couple had one child together, a boy named Lewis Steenrod Newman born in 1839. He also served as a Member of the Virginia State Senate from 1841 to 1846, and as Postmaster for Wheeling, Virginia, (later West Virginia), from 1846 to 1849. He then decided to run for a seat in the United States Congress and was elected. A Member of the Democratic Party, he then served Virginia's 15th District (Thirty-First Congress) in the United States House of Representatives from March 4, 1849, until his death in office on September 8, 1849. He passed away suddenly before the assembling of the United States Congress while visiting Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, on September 8, 1849, at the age of 44. He was buried in the Old First Street Cemetery in Moundsville, West Virginia.
