Angus McDonald was born in Hannibal, Missouri to Edward Charles McDonald and Susan Ellen Peake McDonald. He grew up in Hannibal, and went to college in Palmyra, Missouri. Angus eventually moved to St. Louis with his family after the death of his father who was a casualty of the Civil War. He worked as a traveling salesman for stationery and bank supply houses. Angus met his wife, Katherine (Katie) Rightly McDonald while he was staying at the Rightly house in Council Grove, Kansas (the hotel owned by Katie's parents). They were married in Council Grove, and had two children; Jamie who died at the age of 12 from a brain tumor, and Susan Peake McDonald Hartley. His wife died in 1912, and he was living with his daughter Susan and her family in Kansas City, Missouri when he died.

Angus McDonald, 82 years old, who died last night at St. Mary's hospital, was widely known among bankers in Kansas and in other states in the southwest. Mr. McDonald had traveled for fifty-eight years for various stationery and bank supply houses. His most recent connection had been with the Samuel Dodsworth Stationery Company of Kansas City. He was the father of Mrs. D.L. Hartley , 4114 Campbell Street.
