Duane Peter Smith Sr. "Pete" 1926 ~ 2011 Dad left our embrace to join those who went before him on April 6, 2011. Dad was born on February 12, 1926, in Carr Creek, Kansas, the fourth of nine children born to George Philip and Celestine Effie Hake Smith. Dad lived through the Great Depression and the Dust Bowl, and left the plains of Kansas to join the Navy and fight in World War II in 1944. Dad was assigned to the LST 894, and saw many exotic places. He liked to tell us stories of the places he'd seen, the crazy things he'd done, and the beautiful women he met while in the service. Dad was discharged in 1946, with the rank of Fireman 1/c V-6. After returning home, Dad gave his heart to a Kansas girl. He married our mother, Rosemond Elgentine (Mary) Sellers on August 1, 1950. To this union were born three children, LeRoy Philip (Carol) Smith, Diane Celeste (Jim) Preston, and Duane Peter Smith Jr. We lost Mom in 1965, and Dad did his best to go on, but she was always in his heart and on his mind. I like to think of Heaven as a giant kitchen table, where those who have gone before us are gathered round. I trust that Mom was there to greet Dad, along with his parents; sisters, Darlene and Rosemary; brothers, Elmer, Charlie, Phil and George; best friends, Kenny and Art; and many others who knew and loved him. Dad is survived not only by the three of us kids, six grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, his sister Patricia Hardman, and his brother, Leon Joseph (Madonna) Smith, but also by a multitude of nieces, nephews, cousins, and their children. For those of us left behind, a viewing will be held at 6-8 p.m. on Friday, April 8, 2011, at Redwood Memorial Mortuary, 6500 South Redwood Road. After the services in Salt Lake City, we'll be taking Dad home to Cawker City. A separate service will be held there at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, April 12, 2011, at Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church. Special thanks to Dr. Cindi Leech at the VA Hospital for all of the wonderful care she's given Dad over the years, and to the wonderful team of nurses and hospice workers at Community Nursing Services. You gave us extra time with Dad that we would not have had otherwise. Bless you all!
