Elmer G. Smith, 77, Solomon, died Nov. 29, 1997, at the Salina Regional Health Center. He was born June 4, 1920, in Cawker City to Philip and Celestine Hake Smith. He attended Haseltine Country School near Cawker City. He entered the Civilian Conservation Corp at age 14. He enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps at age 17. He fought in the Pacific Campaign of World War II as a member of the elite Carlson's Raiders. He received a Purple Heart and numerous campaign ribbons and battle stars. He was also a drill instructor in the Marine Corps. He spent the remainder of his career in law enforcement, serving over 25 years as police chief in Cawker city. He also served as undersheriff in Mitchell and Osborn counties.
He married Jean Edwards Malek Aug. 21, 1954. She died Oct. 17, 1986. He married Barbara Cook Hartung June 9, 1991.
He was preceded in death by his first wife Jean, a son, Edward J. Makek, two brothers and a sister.
Survivors include his wife Barbara; three sons, Kerry Smith of Concordia, Keenan Smith of Chapman and Ricky Malek of Pensacola, Fla.; two daughters, Renee Marion of Raytown, Mo. And Carleen Gilmore of Russell; a stepdaughter, Jackie Pauls of Salina; three brothers, Charles Smith of Derby, Joe Smith of Wichita and Duane Smith of Salt Lake City; two sisters, Rosemary Myers of San Antonio, Texas and Patricia Hardman of Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.; 21 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
The funeral will be at 10 a.m., Tuesday, Dec. 2, at the Carlson-Becker Funeral Home in Solomon with the Rev. Sam Owen officiating. Military graveside services will be at 2 p.m., Tuesday at Prairie Grove Cemetery, Cawker City.
Friends may call from 7-8 p.m. Monday, and until the time of service. Memorial may be made to the Solomon First Responders or the Solomon Yoked Parish.
