East Union - Esther H. Tolman, 91, died Saturday, February 1, 2003 at her home here in the care of her family. Born at South Hope, July 11, 1911, she was one of four children of Hartley M. and Ida M. Shirreffs Watts. She attended Union schools. She married Donald Tolman in East Union on February 9, 1926. They first resided in East Union and later at West Rockport. In 1947, they moved to Mrs. Tolman's family homestead here, where she has since resided.

A devoted homemaker, Mrs. Tolman raised thirteen children as well as a foster daughter whom she considered her own daughter. She kept a daily log of visitors to in her home, and annually entered more than 1000 names in that record.

Mrs. Tolman was pre-deceased by her husband in 1976, a son Harold in 1999, a granddaughter Joyce Esther Vinal in 1949, a grandson Jason Barker in 2002, a son-in-law Robert Widdecombe in 1991, one brother and two sisters.

She is survived by five sons, Alfred and his wife Janet of Hope, Ernest and his wife Patricia of Vista, CA, Lloyd Tolman of Union, Paul and his wife Florence of Warren, Richard and his wife Sandra of Union; seven daughters, Mildred Wiley and her husband John of Owls Head, Barbara Widdecombe of Rockland, Leola Vinal and her husband William of Union, Arlene "Betty" Paulsen and her husband Donald of South Thomaston; Geraldine Barker and her husband Ronald of Detroit Lakes, MN, Maxine King of Hermon, Gloria Keadle and her husband Scott of Delta, CO; a foster daughter, Nancy Anderson of Portland; a daughter-in-law Rolande Tolman of Alaska; 25 grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren as well as several nieces and nephews.
