Gilles Rites Are Held Monday

Funeral services for Francis Gilles, Sr., 63, who died at his home on Lena rt. 2, Friday morning after an illness of several months, were held at 9 o'clock Monday Morning at St. Charles Catholic church here, where Rev. Frank Francart intoned the requiem high mass. The body was placed in the church cemetery mausoleum, for burial in the spring. Pallbearers were Rudolph Niquette, Gilbert Niquette, George Greenwood, Walter Burg, John Otradovec and Ralph Hansel. Rev. Frank Francart led recitation of the parish rosary at the funeral home at 8 o'clock on Sunday evening and members of the Oconto K.C. Lodge recited the rosary at 8:30.

Born Feb. 26, 1890, at Jericho, Wisconsin, Mr. Gilles came to the Lena area with his father, the late John Gilles, when he was 11 years old. He served as chairman of the town of Lena from 1930 to 1937 and from 1939 to 1947. Two years prior to 1939 he served as assessor for the town of Lena.

Survivors include his wife, Susan, eight sons, John of Minneapolis, Major Mark Gilles with the Army Air Force at Roswell, New Mexico, Merne and Francis of Lena route 3, Joseph, Robert Richard and Leo at home; two daughters, Mary and Agnes of Minneapolis; six grandchildren; three sisters, Mrs. Gertrude Schoenborn, Oconto Falls; Mrs. Mathilda Brohaugh, Laurel, Montana, and Mrs. Anna Dick of Bridgeton, N.J. Funeral arrangements were in charge of the Steffen Funeral home, Lena.
