On August 23, 1870, in Carroll County, Maryland Rachel wed for the second time to Jeremiah Lockard. Jeremiah was the son of William Lockard, Sr and Hannah Fowler Lockard of Westminster. Jeremiah was himself a widower, and brought three children into the marriage with Rachel: Mary E (born 1862); William E (born 1864) and Anna Rebecca (born 1866.) The union between Rachel and Jeremiah produced at least one more child, Carrie Lockard.
Rachel and Jeremiah were already acquainted for many years. Jeremiah’s mother died when he was very small child, and his father, William Lockard, remarried to Sarah Trine Lockard, the Aunt of Rachel.
Records indicate that Jeremiah Lockard died in 1878.
Rachel died at age 46 on September 18, 1884 from diphtheria, and her daughter Carrie Lockard followed her in death 10 days later. It is a mystery why Rachel’s headstone lists the surname of her first husband, but perhaps it was purchased by her son James Ebaugh later in life, and he chose to memorialize her with his father’s surname.
Rachel died one day after her aunt, Sarah Trine Lockard.
