Mrs. Augusta Miller Martin was born September 1, 1853, in Prussia, Germany. At the age of six months her parents came to Milwaukee where she resided.

On October 5, 1873, she was married to Lewis Martin at Waukesha. They came to Devils Lake and started farming in the wilderness. They raised a family of twelve children, two of whom passed away in childhood. Mr. Martin died on March 26, 1895, leaving the mother alone to care for the family. Mrs. Martin was an exceptional mother and business manager. Not only did she keep her family together, giving them educational advantages, but she builded a beautiful home, where her family and friends were always welcome.

Mrs. Martin enjoyed good health until the last few years when paralysis began to appear and gradually her health failed, until she passed away at midnight, Nov. 24th (1925).

All of her children came to her bedside about ten days before her death and remained with her until the end.

The following sons and daughters survive:
Mary Martin, Emma Bassett, Ida Ott, of Baraboo; Alma Martin of St. Paul, Dina Bell of Fremont, Ia; and August, Edward, Lewis and Albert Martin of Baraboo, and John of Minneapolis.

She also leaves the following brothers and sisters: Mrs. Mary Schley, Mrs. Tena Eels, Mike, Andrew, George and Frank Zick of Waukesha; Mrs. Lizzie Naezer of Milwaukee; and Mrs. Anna Schultz of North Dakota.

The funeral was held from the Lutheran church on Thanksgiving day at two o'clock. The Rev. Piepper spoke most fittingly of the day and the occasion. The church was filled with sorrowing friends and relatives who came to pay their last respects to the venerable lady.

Among the many beautiful floral tributes was a large blanket of mammoth chrysanthemums, a token of esteem from the cottage people of Devils Lake.

Those acting as pall bearers were August, John, Albert, Edward and Lewis Martin, and A. K. Bassett.

Interment was made in Walnut Hill Cemetery. Those from away who came to attend the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. John Martin of Minneapolis; Mrs. Mary Schley, Mrs. Tena Eels, Andrew Zick, Mr. And Mrs. Mike Zick of Waukesha, and Mrs. Lizzie Naezer and Jno. Birkenheier of Milwaukee, Mr. And Mrs. Joe Bodenberger of Evansville; Mrs. Vivian Chafield of Mazomanie; Mr. And Mrs. B. F. Davies of Spring Green, Mr. John Bonham of Madison.
