COLUMBIA - Frank "Bud" Brennecke Jr., 85, of Columbia, died April 6, 2011.
The son of the late Polly Mishoe and Frank Brennecke Sr., Bud was born on January 26, 1926, in the family home on Blossom Street. As a boy growing up in the difficult days of the Depression, Bud found a world of adventure in the Shandon and Five Points of that era. Many of those adventures took place in Shandon Park where he spent summer days under the watchful eye of Emily Douglas. He attended Shandon School, Hand Junior High School and graduated in the Class of 1944 after four memorable years at Dreher High School. He forged lifelong friendships along the way.

Bud had to pass on an opportunity to pursue professional baseball. The United States Navy had other plans for him. He joined the Navy Seabees. With stops in Guam and Okinawa, Bud served his country honorably in the waning days of the Second World War.

Bud returned to Columbia after the war. He graduated from the University of South Carolina. On Halloween night, 1947, Bud got the treat when he met the apple of his eye, Harriette Hardee of Georgetown. The two were married the following May. Bud and his bride were blessed with 54 years together until Harriette's death in 2002.

The student and new husband inquired about part-time work at the South Carolina State Farmers Market, then located in the Assembly Street area of Columbia. Mr. Chris Leventis said there was no work. As Bud was walking away, Mr. Leventis said, "Wait a minute." The minute turned into a 40-year career in the wholesale fresh fruit and vegetable industry; work in which Bud took considerable delight. His numerous customers across the Southeast invariably became his friends.

Bud brought landscapes to life with his interest in horticulture and eye for detail. He found pleasure in the tug of a fish at the end of his line and passed that pleasure on to his grandsons. Bud was a charter member of Forest Lake Presbyterian Church. His faith journey began with a praying mother and continues in fellowship with his Redeemer, Jesus Christ. He has now finished the race and kept the faith.

A strong character, filled with humor, Bud touched many people but none more so than his surviving family: daughter, Julia Brennecke; son and daughter-in-law, Frank and Georgia Brennecke; grandchildren, Louise Southern (Michael), Karl Buchholz (Amelia), Teddy Buchholz (Whitney), Anna Brennecke and Taylor Brennecke; brother and sister-in-law, Jerry and Nancy Brennecke; nephews and niece, John Foley, Kevin Foley, Clay Brennecke, Mishoe Croom; and faithful, loving friend, Bobbie Thorne. His sister, Myra Dwyer, predeceased him.

Funeral services will be held 3 p.m. Saturday, April 9, 2011, at Forest Lake Presbyterian Church with burial in Greenlawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends 6-7:30 p.m. Friday at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel.

Memorials may be made to Boys Farm, P.O. Box 713, Newberry, SC 29108.
