Wife of John EakinMartha, "Mattie", was born in Scrubgrass Township in Venango Co., PA. She was the oldest of two daughter her father had with her mother Abbie. Her father remarried and Martha had 10 step siblings by her father's second marriage to IsaBella, "Ibbie", (Sloan) McQuiston.

In early 1826, at the age of 19, she was living and working in Barkeyville, Venango Co., PA as a housekeeper for her grandfather Robert Crawford.

Mattie married "Big John" Eakin sometime during 1826 in Barkeyville, Venango County, Pennsylvania. Between 1827 and 1845 they had 6 sons and 5 daughters. In the order of birth their names are: Washington, Esther, John Henry, Robert Crawford, Mary, Alexander, Martha Jane, Emma Nancy, Minerva, William Clark and Samuel David Eakin.

She had 5 sons serve in the Civil War, of which 3 died do to that war. The sons were Washington, John Henry, Alexander, Samuel David and William Clark. Samuel and William lived, but William was crippled and Samuel could not take care of his family and received a disability pension when he was just 45 years old because of the war.

Notes taken from the headstones in Ebinezer Cemetery, 1/2 mile northwest of Wesley, Pennsylvania say John was born in 1818. This has to be incorrect because his first baby is born in 1822. Other records I have, show his birth date as 1800. The headstone at the cemetery has to be wrong. It also shows his wife as being born in 1820. How could she have had a baby in 1822? So while very rare I believe in this case the headstones in the cemetery are in error about the birth date.
