Herbert was born December 2, 1923 in St. Mary's Township, rural Foxholm, ND, the son of Alois and Anna (Berlinger) Braun. He was reared and educated in the Foxholm area and attended rural school in St. Mary's Township, Ward County.
On November 28, 1944 he entered the US Army and served during World War II. He was honorably discharged August 21, 1946 and returned to North Dakota.
On June 14, 1958 Herbert married Darlene F. Wilmot at St. Leo's Catholic Church, Minot. Herbert began employment with the Great Northern Railway in 1946, which later became the Burlington Northern Railroad. He worked as brakeman/conductor for 47 years until his retirement on June 17, 1993.
While working on the railroad, Herbert also helped work on the family farm near Foxholm for many years. His wife Darlene passed away on October 17, 1998.
Herbert was a member of Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church, Minot. He was also a member of the United Transportation Union, the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion.
Herbert was preceded in death by his wife, Darlene; his parents; siblings, Edmund, Ewald, Joseph, Sister Adeline SMP, Alois Jr., Sister Monica SMP, Sylvester, Raphel and Herman.
