OBITUARY: Gordon Davis Hooper (1915-1998)
Gordon Davis Hooper, age 83, of Caney Fork Community, Cullowhee, died Tuesday, July 14, 1998 at his residence after a brief illness.
Funeral services were held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, July 17, at Melton-Riddle Funeral Home Chapel. The Revs. Tommy Holden and Tim Kerns officiated. Burial was in the Old Coward Cemetery. Pallbearers were Brandon Hooper, Joey Hooper, Kenneth Hooper, Mark Hooper, Scott Hooper, Matt Cassell and Johnny Hoxit. Honorary pallbearers were are bear hunters.
He was a native of Jackson County, where he lived most of his life. He retired from the shipyard in Newport News, Virginia. A son of the late Huey and Annie Woody Zachary Hooper, he was a cattle farmer and avid bear hunter.
Surviving are two daughters, Mary Hooper Wyatt of Liberty, S.C., and Frances Hoxit of Balsam; five sons, Gordon Dean Hooper of Whittier, James "Kit" Hooper, Frank Hooper and Huey Hooper, all of Pickens,S.C., and Wayne Hooper of Easley, S.C.; one brother, Conrad Hooper of Raleigh, N.C.; 21 grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild.
