Conrad Leonidas Hooper, 92, of Raleigh, formerly of Cullowhee's Caney Fork community, died Monday, Sept. 7, 2009.

Services were held at 3 p.m. Friday, Sept. 11, at Fairmont United Methodist Church.

After graduating from Cullowhee High School and Western Carolina Teachers College, he enlisted in the Air Corps. In World War II, he served with the 21st Weather Squadron attached to the 407th Fighter Squadron of the 9th Air Corps, which was the first Air Force Unit to come to shore at Utah Beach on D-day. After leaving the Air Corps, he became a principal at Fred Olds Elementary School, Hugh Morson High School and Josephus Daniels Junior High School. In 1966, he became superintendent of Raleigh City Schools. He led the system through desegregation and consolidation with Wake County Schools. He was a member of Fairmont United Methodist Church, where he taught Sunday school and men's Bible study. He enjoyed hunting and fishing.

Surviving are his wife of 62 years, Anna Lee Bryson Hooper; one son, Bobby Hooper; one daughter, Becky Michaels; and three grandchildren.
