Walter August Bork, the son of Edward and Augusta (Hendrian) Bork, was born at Decatur, Illinois, on August 12, 1910. He was baptized on August 28, 1910 at St. Johannes Evangelical Lutheran Church in Decatur. Walter lived his youth and received his education in Decatur. At the age of 19, Walter came to live near an aunt and uncle in the Rembrandt, Iowa area.

Walter was united in marriage to Louise Koons on May 8, 1932, at South Sioux City, Nebraska, and this union was blessed with four children: Betty, Larry, Nelda, and Garry. Following their marriage, Walter and Louise lived in the Rembrandt and Linn Grove area where he worked on a farm as a hired man. They then moved to Montgomery, Iowa, where they operated a creamery and Walter delivered milk throughout the Okoboji area. He also worked in a garage while residing in Montgomery. The family then moved to Scott Center Township near Rembrandt where he was engaged in farming. In the fall of 1947, they moved to their farm south of Storm Lake where they lived until their retirement in 1974. Upon their retirement, Walter and Louise moved to Mesa, Arizona, during which time Walter worked for Sundowner Trailers. During their retirement years, Walter and Louise traveled extensively throughout the continental United States and Alaska in their recreational vehicle. They also enjoyed traveling to Hawaii and England. They returned to Storm Lake in April, 1997.

Walter was a member of St. John Lutheran Church of Storm Lake and a former member of the Hayes Farmers Club. He and Louise enjoyed playing cards with friends. Walter was an avid sports fan and he also enjoyed fishing, taking walks in and around Storm Lake, doing wood working, and was an accomplished carpenter for more than 15 years. Walter will be remembered as a kind and thoughtful Christian person who enjoyed life to the fullest.

Walter loved his family and his family will always cherish his memory, including his children: Betty and Marvin Ploeger of Storm Lake, Iowa; Larry and Jeanette Bork of Eddyville, Iowa; Nelda and Dick Sampel of Des Moines, Iowa; and Garry and Terry Bork of Independence, Kentucky; 12 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, one step-grandchild, eight great-great-grandchildren; his brother and sister-in-law, Henry and Kate Bork of Springfield, Illinois; his sister, Mildred Hoadley of Decatur, Illinois; two sisters-in-law: Margaret Bahl of Chicago, Illinois and Doris Johnson of Storm Lake; other relatives and a host of friends.
