Mel J. Vercoe
Vercoe--Mel J., age 89, died in Monterey on October 6, 2004. A native of Mt. Vernon, WA, he was born September 29, 1915. Mel was a 1933 graduate of Mt. Vernon (WA) High School and also attended college in Washington. He served in the Marine Corps before and during World War II. After living in the Bay Area and Santa Cruz, Mel moved to the Monterey Peninsula in 1963. An architect and contractor, he was involved in the construction trade for over 50 years. Mel, a politician at heart, was well-known for his many "Letters to the Editor" which appeared in The Herald and many other newspapers. Mel is survived by his wife of 30 years, Dolores; his children Ken Vercoe and Linda Ferry; his grandson, James Deus and great- granddaughter, Nicole Deus. At his request, no services will be held. Following cremation under the direction of The Paul Mortuary, internment will be at San Carlos Cemetery. Published in the Monterey Herald on 10/9/2004.
