In 1892, Ern married Louisa Unruh in Rosthern,SK. Offspring: Mervyn (Edna Rennick) & Olive (Wilson). Ern began his printing career in Winnipeg and later worked for the Regina Leader Post. Then moved to Rosthern and finally took over the weekly "Milestone Mail' in 1925. In his youth, he played hockey and pitched baseball. He loved fishing and hunting and played chess, bridge & other card games.
He was a member of the Elks and Masonic Lodge. Active in the community, he was a member of the United Church; served as Mayor of Milestone for many years. and was the town administrator until his death.
