In 1875, Lars came to Dakota Territory and took a homestead in Lincoln County. His homestead was located at the southeast quarter of section 31 of Pleasant Township. Near the southern side of this homestead, the small Larsen Cemetery was established, surrounded on all sides by plowed fields. The homestead was located near the corner of the site where the city of Beresford was later established.
On November 29, 1875, Lars Larsen married Anna Marie Petersen. The two lived in a small house on the homestead and endured hard times. The small house was replaced by a more modern house in 1895. The couple had four sons and five daughters; but, the daughter and two of the sons preceeded the parents in death. The two remaining sons were George W. and Fritz Wilhelm Larsen.
After his wife's death in 1909, Lars purchased a house in Beresford, SD, where he lived alone and eventually died. When Lars wouldn't answer his telephone, Mrs. E. J. Satter was sent to his house; and, she found him dead in the basement. Lars Larsen was the last of thirteen people who were recorded to have been buried at the Larsen Cemetery.
