619 Squadron's Avro Lancaster I (#LL919) aircraft, with an aircrew of seven, took off at night from RAF Dunholme Lodge for an air operation over Schweinfurt in Germany. Attacked by a night-fighter, LL919 crashed near Landéville in France, taking the lives of six members of the crew. One airman, who survived the crash with injuries, was initially cared for by local citizens; he required further medical care, so was handed over to German authorities for treatment and later was interned in a German POW camp.
