From The Wilmington Messenger (August 30, 1896):
With regret we chronicle the death of Mrs. Evelina J. VanBokkelin, who passed away yesterday morning at 2:40 o'clock, aged 77 years. The deceased lady was a Miss Smith of Newbern and was the widow of the late Mr. Adrian H. VanBokkelin, who was a prominent citizen and merchant of Wilmington some years ago. She leaves only one child, Mrs. E. B. Wiggins, of this city, who has the sincere sympathy of numerous friends in this sad hour. The funeral will take place this afternoon at 4:30 o'clock at St. James Episcopal church. The interment will be at Oakdale cemetery. Mr. J. F. Shackelford, of Tarboro, a nephew of Mrs. VanBokkelin is here to attend the funeral.
