The son of William Barrow and Pheraby Hilliard, Bennett Hilliard Barrow was born on Highland Plantaion. He married his first wife, Emily Joor, the daughter of Wilkinson County, Mississippi General John Joor and his wife Emily Richardson. They had the following children: James, John Joor, Emily Caroline, Bartholomew, Clifford Bennett, Amanda Rosalie, Hilliard Bat and Emily Ruffin. After Emily's death in 1845, Bennett would marry her sister, a widow, Nancy Joor Haile. Their children were Albert, Anna Eliza and Martha Aliena.

Bennett Hilliard Barrow kept a plantation diary of life on Highland Plantation, which he inherited from his father as a teenager.

Other than being a planter, Bennett Hilliard was extremely involved in West Feliciana civic matters and served as a police juror, road commission member and other benevolent matters in the parish.
