Memorial services were held Aug. 2, 1998, at the Canby Chapel Church of the Nazarene for Ralph Amos Lais, 94, of Woodburn. Born April 10, 1904, near Hubbard, he died July 28, at a Woodburn care center.

He was raised in Hubbard and attended Zion Mennonite Church. At 21, he moved to Hesston, Kan., where he attended high school and college. He married Esther Roth on Sept. 9, 1928.

They returned to Molalla in 1937 and owned and operated logging and sawmill operations. They moved to Vernonia in 1952; then in 1956 to Gerhart where they operated the Lighthouse Motel. He also worked for the State Industrial Accident Commission as a safety inspector until 1968. He moved to Woodburn in 1984.

Survivors include his sons, Pastor James W. of Canby and Edwin of Woodburn; sisters, Mildred Weber of Sweet Home, Mable Burkhart of Portland and Blanche Warnock of Salem; a brother, Arthur of Michigan; nine grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. His wife died in 1967.

The family suggests memorials may be made to the Gideon Memorial Bible Program.
