He was born the son of O.W. and Lula Burgett Church.
He married Margaret H. Huddleston on August 16, 1958 in Galesburg.
He is survived by his wife Margaret, a son, Steven (and Tracy) Church of Indiana, Two daughters, Penelope "Penny" Schalk and Melody (and Bob) Diel both of Galesburg, 13 grandchildren and 10 G-Grandchildren and (3) sisters Katie Gumbel of Seattle, Wah. and Barbara (and Ed) Marquith and Christine (and Keith) Kuntz, both of Galesburg.
Jim was a conductor for the Burlington Northern RR for 30 years, retiring in 1989. He was a member of First Church of God. He enjoyed woodworking and gardening and loved spending time with his children, especially his grandchildren.
He served in the USAF.
