After the death of his sister, Mary "Mamie" (McGuire) Lass; Joe and his wife cared for Mamie's youngest daughter, Mary, until the girl's father remarried.
Joe spent his life residing and farming in the vicinity of Beresford, South Dakota. He was considered to have been well respected because of his active involvement with the community and church at Emmet, South Dakota.
Joe was preceded in death by his wife and parents. He was survived by three sons, a daughter, and seven grandchildren.
