John was one of nine children born to James and Elizabeth (Swift) McGuire. At the age of two, he came with his parents to Dakota Territory. John lived in the community of Emmet until moving to Iowa at the age of twenty-six. He never married.
During his last thirty years, John's health failed; and, he spent his last thirteen years in a hospital. He died at a hospital in Dubuque, Iowa. John's brother went to Dubuque, IA and brought John's body back to Emmet for burial next to the graves of his parents. John was survived by two brothers and three sisters.
