Nelda Hodge, 85, passed away at her home in Ennis on Wednesday, March 16, 2011.
Nelda was born in Dallas, Texas on February 5, 1926 to John Clark and Mildred Joyce Akins. She grew up in Liberty, Texas and graduated from Sulpher Springs High School and Crozier Tech in 1944. She also attended East Texas State University.
Nelda worked for Southwestern Life Insurance Company for thirty years as an executive before retiring in 1988. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Waxahachie. She enjoyed playing the piano and loved music, especially Barber Shop Quartets. She also loved watching old classic movies. She had a giving heart and was a prolific letter writer.
She is survived by a step-daughter, Clairice, and her husband, Lou Harding; step-son, David Hodge, and wife, Vicki; four grandchildren; one great-grandchild; sister, Joann Akins, and her husband, Bob Peebles and her faithful companion, Danny (her poodle). She is preceded in death by husbands, Gaylon Chapman in 1944 and Jim Hodge in 1989, one brother James Clark and one sister, Jonnie Virginia Akins.
A graveside service will be held on Saturday, March 19, 2011 at 10 a.m. in Myrtle Cemetery with Marvin Mott officiating, under the direction of J.E. Keever Mortuary, Inc.
The family requests that memorial be made to the Denton State School in memory of Nelda.
