In Memory of Mrs. Mary Smallwood.
Mary Smallwood was born March 12th, 1821, Marion county, Ind., and died March 11th, 1902. She moved to Missouri with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Fox, in 1839. She was the last of a family of ten children. Aug. 4th, 1940, she was married to Wm. J. Smallwood. He died some years later leaving five children for her to care for, all of whom survive her.
She was a woman who left the world better for having lived. Her life was without ostentation and without show. but it was one of good deeds and acts of mercy. Full of years she passed away and when the light went out it closed the record of work well done and every obligation fulfilled. Her principal aim in life was to do good. Words are too feeble to make known our sorrow; language cannot express it. It can only be felt in the inmost depths of the aching heart; but such is life.
We delight to keep her memory green and will rehearse to generations yet unborn the beauty of your many virtues. Mother, grandmother we miss thee, but let us hope that we may all be better and happier beyond the grave.
She was laid to rest March 13th in the Baker cemetery.
