Moses was a member of the Board of Trustees of the village Newburgh Corporation for a number of years, including six terms as president. In addition to other community positions, he was a founder of Newburgh High School.

He married twice:

1. Margaret Gregory (d. 27 Feb 1824).
Children:
a. Mary Eunice (d. Jan. 30, 1824)
b. Ruletta G. Belknap (d. 11 Aug 1850).
c. Abel W. Belknap (d. 26 Jun 1847).

2. Ruth Pierson Cook (d. 23 Oct 1833).
Child:
d. Moses Cook Belknap (d. Oct. 3, 1892).
