In 1836 Lewis, on horseback, visited the Platte country, and brought back such a favorable report that in 1837 the whole family which included his father's family came west from Indiana. Lewis and his family settled in the Missouri bottom, near Farley.

Lewis started his life as a farmer, became a justice of the peace, engaged extensively in merchandising and in various ventures on the plains. He rose to a high position at the bar and was elected State senator for his district. He was known for his versatile talent and indomitable energy.

Lewis' home (Lewis had several) located at 403 N. Esplanade St, Leavenworth, Kansas is on the National Register of Historic Homes

1st wife, Maria Brown, died leaving the following children: John, James and Victoria.

2nd wife, Nancy Bozarth former widow, had child: Lizzie.
