Calvin F. Burnes with his brother, James N. Burnes, started the National Bank of St. Joseph in 1873 and the waterworks of that city. After the death of his brother, James, Calvin formed the 'Burnes Estate'.

Due to business obligations, Calvin divided his time between St. Louis and St. Joseph, Missouri. He died at 'Ayr Lawn' the Burnes family home in St. Joseph and was initially interred in Mount Mora Cemetery. He was the last of the old Burnes line that came to Missouri in 1837.
