A veteran of the Revolutionary War, American patriot Lewis Baldwin died at the war's end, when he was approximately 37 years old. He predeceased both his parents, Amos and Mary (nee Taylor) Baldwin, and his wife, the former Martha Williams, with whom he'd had a son, Henry, born in May 1773. The widowed Martha survived Lewis by some 44 years before joining him in death in 1826. The couple's original gravestones were apparently lost to the elements, but their names and the years* of their births and deaths appear on a granite family monument which was erected in this churchyard during the early 20th Century, and Lewis is among the Revolutionary War veterans named on the D.A.R. Memorial just outside the front door of the church.
*The birth year given for Lewis on this monument is "1745"; the source of the more specific birthdate on this memorial page is "The Founders and Builders of the Oranges", a history by Henry Whittemore, published in 1896.
