John and his family spent some time in Toronto, Canada before moving to America. They first lived in Buffalo Center, Michigan for a year. Then, they moved to Shelbyville, Indiana. Later, they moved to Freeport, Illinois. Eventually, John's family came to Dakota Territory in 1868. Together with Patrick Jennings and Denis Carroll, John and his wife were reported to have been involved in the formation of the Emmet community, named after Robert Emmet.
John died at the age of 76.
