Clifford Edgar Morton My Father

Clifford Edgar Morton was born in Fort Scott, Kansas on the 22nd of December 1919. As a young boy he attended grade and middle school in Fort Scott. During his 7th and 8th grades he spent a number of mornings running a trap line with his dog. It was a great time for him except when he got sent home from school because he just happened to trap a skunk that evening. It seemed he always ended up getting sprayed by the skunk the next morning. Needless to say he was sent home from school due to the odor that followed him into the classroom. As he grew to manhood United States was drawn in to World War II. C.E enlisted in the U. S. Navy in 1942 where he served as a Gunners Mate aboard the U.S.S Alabama. He saw action in the Pacific Theater where he helped to sink a submarine that had torpedoed his transport ship. After processing out of the Navy at the end of the war he moved to Wichita, KS where he went to work for the Santa Fe railroad as a switchman. Over the years he moved up in the railroad to head engineer in Wichita. He married Catherine Charlene Cooper in 1947 and they had three sons. Clifford acquired many skills throughout his life carpentry, mason work, Semi-truck driver, and well digging. But his favorite pastime was hunting. His favorite prey to hunt was upland birds. As his sons aged they were brought up as hunting partners with their Dad. Although Cliff still had his lifelong hunting partner for the times the boys were in school and could not go. He was a loyal to his friends and was always available when they needed help. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge where he attained his 32nd degree.
