William was born to Jacob Westfall and Judith Hornbeck in Montague, New Jersey and was christened by the Kingston, New York Dutch Reformed Church on Mar 26, 1735. In 1737, he moved with his parents to present Moorefield, West Virginia. In 1748, he moved with his parents to a nearby 400 acre farm on the South Fork of the South Branch of the Potomac River. He wed Elizabeth Thorne, daughter of Peter and Elizabeth Thorne, in Hampshire County in 1758. In April of 1758, William, along with brother Abel, joined with Tobias Decker to establish the Decker Colony at Decker Creek near present Morgantown, West Virginia. The coloney was attacked by thirty Delaware Indians on October 16, 1759, and eight people killed. Abel was taken prisoner and later escaped but his wife and son were killed. William and Elizabeth returned to Hampshire County and there was born:

In 1772, William moved west into the mountains with his parents and others to establish the town of Edmonton (Beverly, WV). There was born:

12) Euphemia (Effie) in 1781

In 1795, William moved to Clark County, Kentucky with his brother James. William's son William stayed in Beverly. In about 1798, William and James moved to Cincinnati, Ohio then soon settled in the area around present Dayton Ohio.
