He mustered in Co K 4th Iowa Cavalry on 25 Nov 1861. Benjamin received several promotions: promoted 8th Corporal 26 Nov 1861, 7th Corporal 16 Jan 1862, 6th Corporal 1 Nov 1862, 4th Corporal 1 Jan 1863, 2nd Corporal 20 May 1863, and 1st Corporal 1 Sep 1863. He was given a surgeon's certificate of disability (chronic bronchitis) on 13 May 1862 but was carried on the company rolls as "absent sick" until 31 Dec 1863, when dropped as discharged at St. Louis, Missouri.
Benjamin and Ivy had seven children: Hattie, Anna, Charles, J.W. (died in infancy), Mary, Emma, and Homer.
Ivy died 25 Jun 1875. After the death of his wife, Benjamin made his home in Mt. Pleasant with his daughter Anna and son-in-law John W Burton.
Benjamin died in 1877 at age 59 years.
