Burial will follow in Upper Cane Creek Cemetery in Heflin, with Dryden Funeral Home of Heflin in charge. The body will be at the church one hour prior to services.
Mr. Thompson died Friday at the Cleburne County Nursing Home in Heflin.
Survivors include a daughter, Edith Hammond, and her husband, Doug, of Heflin; a son, Claud "Mickey" Thompson and his wife, Janice, of Douglasville, Ga.; a brother, Noel Thompson of Heflin; three granddaughters, Melissa Williamson, Melinda Trivett and Starla Perren; and five great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Billy Joe Charles, Earnest Charles, David Coggins, Hulett Thompson, Woody Thompson, David Thompson, Scott Turner and Ken Minter. Honorary pallbearers will be members of American Legion Post No. 19.
Mr. Thompson, a lifelong Cleburne County resident, was a retired truck driver for Charles and Sons Lumber Company and a retired custodian of the Cleburne County Courthouse. He was a member of Edwardsville Baptist Church. He served in the Army during World War II. He was a member of the American Legion Post No. 19 and the VFW.
Mr. Thompson was preceded in death by his wife, Opal Coggins Thompson; a grandson, Mitchell Thompson; his parents, Joseph Alex and Ida Mae Bobo Thompson; six brothers, Euell Thompson, Ellis Thompson, Earl Thompson, Jim Thompson, Robert Thompson and Joseph Thompson; three sisters, Ellen Charles, Ethel Banister and Elise Dryden.
