A 1935 graduate of Battle Ground High School, Stanley Lester Burgen died Saturday, June 26, 2004, at Southwest Washington Medical Center. He was 87.

He was born Oct. 21, 1916, in Goldendale, Wash.

Mr. Burgen, a Merchant Marine veteran of World War II, worked at Crown Zellerbach paper mill in Camas from 1935 to 1949 and then attended Coyne Electrical School in Chicago. He worked for Helt-O'Dennel in Portland and later for General Electric before retiring in 1981. He installed turbines in The Dalles, John Day, McNary, Chief Joseph, Grand Coulee and Wanapum dams, and also worked in Greece and Africa.

Mr. Burgen was a life member of Vancouver Elks Lodge No. 823, Odd Fellows Lodge No. 196 in Washougal and the Electrical Workers Union, Local 49, in Portland.

He is survived by his wife, Arva, at home.

The casket will be open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday at Straub's Funeral Home in Camas. A funeral will begin at 2 p.m. Thursday at the funeral chapel.

Private burial will in Camas Cemetery.

Memorial donations may be made to a charity of donor's choice.
