James enlisted in the Confederate States Army on 15 March 1862 in Laurens District, South Carolina. He was mustered as a Private in Company F, 14th South Carolina Infantry. He was first captures at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania on 3 July 1863 and paroled at DeCamp General Hospital at Davids Island, New York Harbor on 24 August 1863. He was captured again on 28 July 1864 at Petersburg, Virginia and received at Elmira Prison in New York on 12 August 1864. He was sent to James River for exchange on 14 March 1865. He was admitted to Jackson Hospital in Richmond, Virginia on 19 March 1865 and furloughed on 24 March 1865 for 60 days.
