were both living in a home they owned, valued at $4,150 at 743 'E.' St. in San Bernardino - but listed on an entirely different page of the census.

There was a radio set in the home.

In the 1940 U. S. census, 16 yr. old Pearl L. Pennington, b. in CA., was attending school and living in a home (not a farm) her parents owned, valued at $4,000, at 530 E. 4th St. in Ontario, San Bernardino, CA. with her

John worked 48 hrs. in the week prior to the census and 52 weeks in 1939. His salary was listed as $2,100. Ada also worked 48 hours in the week before the census and 52 weeks in 1939. Her salary was $1,500.

SAN BERNARDINO - People who knew them say they were a team.
"She was marvelously supportive of the work Bob was doing in his political life," are the words used by Mayor Pat Morris to describe Pearl "Penny" Holcomb, widow of former Mayor Bob Holcomb, who died four months ago.
Penny Holcomb, 87, died unattended at her home Sunday and the Coroner's Office will rule on the cause of death, a city spokeswoman said.
The term for the Holcombs as a team was heard from numerous people.
"She loved the life of civic leadership and she led by example," Morris said, adding, "She was a true engaged partner in all of his affairs." Morris said he knew the couple when he was still a lawyer before he was elevated to the Superior Court. That's when he was appointed by Mayor Holcomb to be chairman of the Parks and Recreation Commission.
The Holcombs were very active in the city's Sister City Program, Morris said, and Holcomb friend Clare Gresham said they also were extremely active in American Field Service, the organization that sends American kids abroad to live in foreign homes and absorb the culture; and brings foreign children to the United States, where they live with host families and learn American culture.
Services for Holcomb will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at First Presbyterian Church at 1900 North D St.
A native of Ontario, she attended local schools, Chaffey Junior College and UC Berkeley, where she graduated with a BA in biology. She taught in Lodi for a few years and then moved to San Bernardino with her husband.
She was a member of the Assistance League and Les Confreres, CSUSB Library Board, San Bernardino Symphony Association, ChildHelp, Girl Scouts, Republican Women, Sturges Foundation, International Council for Friendship, Goodwill. Heritage House and San Bernardino Historical Society.
Besides her husband Robert, she was preceded in death by a son, Jay. She leaves two sons, William Robert of Los Angeles and Robert Grant of Walnut Creek and a daughter, Terri Lee Holcomb-Halstead of San Bernardino and three grandchildren.
