Malissa was the daughter of Abraham and Nancy (Whitlach) Headley, the family moved to Wood County, Va. (now W.Va.) in 1858. On Oct. 9, 1864 at Union District, Wood County she married George W. Brown, a blacksmith, with whom she would have at least 12 children (five of whom died in infancy. She died of stomach cancer, as had her husband a few months prior. She was survived by her stepson Albert L. (known as Logan) sons, William, Charley, George, Frank, and Jacob, and daughters Hester and Runa Belle (known as "Ronie.")
